The University of Sassari was founded in Sassari in 1558. The official opening dates back to the month of May 1562. Today, the University, which is of medium size, with a total number of over 18.000 students and about 700 teachers, consists of 11 Faculties and over 40 Departments, Study Centres and Institutes. There are several Specialist Schools, Research Institutions, Schools for Special Research and Postgraduate Schools.
The University has always aimed at developing policies of international cooperation, especially at EU level. To this end, it has been involved in various projects as Erasmus-Ects, Lingua, Comett, Tempus and others; as a result, a large number of researchers and students from within and outside the EU have had and continue to have the opportunity to carry on a part of their studies in Italy.
The Department of Infectious Disease Epidemiology is located on the UNISS campus and promotes interdisciplinary research in the epidemiology, population biology, evolution and control of infectious diseases.
The Department carries out world class research into a wide variety of infectious diseases and pathogens, including HPV, AIDS and HIV, SARS and pandemic influenza, the Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies (e.g. BSE, Scrapie and vCJD), drug-resistant bacteria (e.g. MRSA) and parasites, childhood viral and bacterial diseases, emerging fungal infections, the epidemic viral infections of livestock (e.g. FMD).
At the moment, the Department is the main applicant of a EAHC 2008 funded project: “H-CUBE - HBV-HCV-HIV: THREE DIFFERENT AND SERIOUS THREATS FOR EUROPEAN YOUNG PEOPLE. A NETWORK TO STUDY AND TO FACE THESE CHALLENGES IN THE PARTICIPATING COUNTRIES”.
